The photo above was taken at las Sunday’s distribution of warm clothing, shoes and stationery for 65 children from the so-called ‘untouchable’ community. This took place at the Community Learning Centre (CLC) near the Kamala River in south Nepal that we built in April.
Thanks to Pipal Tree supporter generosity, these children are now receiving extra tuition that will help them complete their education and build a future beyond poverty. Both this programme – and the Christmas gifts – have been made possible by donations through The Big Give, grant funding and by gifts in Wills.
And, following the success of this year’s Christmas Challenge, that ended at noon yesterday, we’re able to fund additional distributions that will reach a further 702 children from extremely poor families at more of our CLC locations along with 24 children who live in a leper colony. We’re aiming to achieve this goal before Christmas.
The Challenge raised an incredible £119,408 from 250 matched donations, plus an additional £12,292 in Gift Aid (UK tax reclaim). That’s a fabulous achievement in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis. We’re also delighted to welcome 40 new donors to our small family of discerning supporters.
I’d like to say a very big personal thank you to everyone who played a part in this remarkable achievement – our pledgers, donors and team members. And make a special mention of graphic designer Peter Helliwell, who produces our eye-catching Big Give flyers and charity reports, entirely pro bono.
Finally, the photo below arrived yesterday morning. It shows one of the 16 young women who have just begun our six-month basic tailoring course in Sarlahi, south Nepal. This has also been funded through The Christmas Challenge.. She looks determined to gain new skills for life notwithstanding family commitments! We’ll help her all the way as she too endeavours to escape poverty.

I did receive a late matching pledge from a generous individual just a few days ago. So, if you missed the main appeal, there’s still a chance to make a Christmas gift that will double up through this link.
